Halton
Arena
2003-04 marks the
eighth year of
on-campus basketball
at Halton Arena. In
those first seven
years, the 49ers
have won 81% of
their home games and
advanced to the
post-season six
times.
The decided
home-court advantage
is in large part due
to the atmosphere
within the arena. In
2001-02, the 49ers
students ranked 10th
in the nation in
attendance at
basketball games
while the 49ers
enjoyed a record
five sellouts and an
average of nearly
7500 fans at every
home game.

the NCAA Tournament.
Year Two generated
an 11-1 record,

1997-98, the 49ers
were 11-2 and earned
a third straight
NCAA bid as C-USA

Barnhardt Student
Activity Center/Halton
Arena
Bringing 49ers
basketball games
back on-campus was
the impetus behind
the creation of this
facility, which is
so much more than a
basketball arena.
The center, which
puts a premium on
student activity,
includes a food
court, a game room,
a state of the art
weight room,
recreational courts,
an indoor jogging
track and a climbing
wall. As for the
49ers, the SAC
includes
administrative
office space,
coaches offices and
reception areas,
lockerrooms for the
men’s and women’s
basketball teams and
volleyball team and
an expansive medical
training room. Of
course, Halton Arena
is the jewel within
this crown plaza.
With 9105 seats, all
with chairbacks,
Halton Arena
epitomizes the
tagline, “not a bad
seat in the house.”
While the 49ers
enjoy a noteworthy
home court
advantage, fans can
enjoy quality
athletics in a
first-class
facility.
Miltimore-Wallis
Athletic Training
and Academic Center
The 49ers built an
addition onto the
Barnhardt Student
Activity Center
primarily to upgrade
the department’s
academic learning
center. With plenty
of desk top space,
computer and
internet access,
tutor carrels and
group meeting space,
the 49ers now offer
their
student-athletes an
exquisite,
modernized
environment
conducive to
academic study.
The ATAC also
includes Charles
Hayward Memorial
Court, as well as a
new weight facility
dedicated to 49ers
student-athletes,
offices and
reception areas for
the men’s and
women’s basketball
and volleyball
programs, an
executive meeting
room, a
video/theater room
as well as an
attractive atrium
geared towards
entertaining.
Irwin Belk Track
and Field
Center/Transamerica
Field
U.S. Olympic
Committee Chair
LeRoy Walker
christened the
facility in 1996 and
since then it has
played host to the
AAU Junior Olympics,
the German Olympic
Track and Field
team, several NCAA
soccer tournament
games, Conference
USA Track and Field
Championships,
Conference USA
Soccer Championships
and North Carolina
High School Track
and Field
Championships. In
addition, it has
allowed the
university the
opportunity to host
such community
events as the
American Heart Walk,
the Senior Games and
the Special
Olympics.
In terms of the
athletic program, it
provides 49ers
student-athletes
with perhaps the
finest track and
field facility in
the Southeast as
well as a spacious
soccer stadium that
rivals any in the
country. The
building also
includes offices and
locker rooms for the
49ers cross country
and track and field
programs.
Wachovia
Fieldhouse
The first new
structure the 49ers
completed served as
an anchor to the D.L.
Phillips Sports
Complex. When built,
it gave the 49ers
soccer, baseball and
softball programs a
brand new home,
complete with
spacious lockerrooms
outfitted with
signature cherry
wood lockers,
coaches offices
convenient to their
playing facilities,
a hospitality room
and concession area.
All in all, the
Fieldhouse gave the
49er programs the
amenities that few
such teams had
anywhere in the
country.
Upgrades at the D.L.
Phillips Complex
have also included
renovations to Tom
and Lib Phillips
Baseball Field, the
49ers Softball
Diamond and the
49ers Tennis Courts.
