Marty Gross, one of the
most highly respected assistant coaches in the country, is in his
fourteenth season at Rice University, but it is his second tour with the
Owls in his 26-plus year college coaching career. Gross also served as
an assistant at Rice in the 1983-84 and 1984-85 seasons.
In addition to Rice, the
48-year-old Gross also coached at his alma mater, Jacksonville
University (FL). His first stint at Jacksonville was from 1981 to 1983.
Gross returned to Jacksonville in 1985 and spent the next seven years at
the campus, including five seasons as the school’s associate head coach.
In 1985-86, the Dolphins
were 21-10, won the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship, and
played in the NCAA Tournament. In 1986-87, the Dolphins were 20-10 and
received an NIT postseason bid.
At Rice, Gross directs the
Owls recruiting efforts and is involved extensively in all areas of the
day-to-day operations of the men’s basketball program. Gross has been
part of the most successful twelve year stretch in Rice basketball
